Inspired by their patients seeking healthier looking skin, SkinMedica® was founded by pioneers in the science of skin rejuvenation. Our co-founder, the renowned dermatologist Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick, had a vision to develop a better way to slow the aging process and unlock the potential of the skin to heal from within; and in 1999, the groundbreaking scientifically based skin care line called SkinMedica® was born.
Skin Medica recommends a GRASS Regimen to achieve your most optimal skin health. GRASS Regimen is an acronym to help patients identify what products they need. It stands for Growth Factors, Retinols, Antioxidants, Specialty Products that are customizable to your specific needs, and SPF, which is the most important skin component to any skin regimen. With this prescribed and individualized regimen Skin Medica was able to make the science of beauty a reality. A GRASS Regimen is only from SkinMedica and has been clinically proven, in fact in clinical trials 100% of patients that used a GRASS Regimen saw improvements in fine lines, wrinkles, skin brightness, and texture of their skin.
In each category there is a product that you can use specifically within the GRASS Regimen. Choose one from each category to formulate your customized skin care regime. The specialty category is the exception! If you have fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes choose TNS Eye Repair. If you have dark spots on your skin choose LYTERA to even skin tone and radiance. If you would like your lips smoother and plumper choose TNS Lip Plump System. If you have redness of your skin, choose Redness Relief CalmPlex. Or choose all four if needed!

What’s the difference between a moisturizer and a hydrator?
A moisturizer is a cosmetic cream or lotion made with humectants or occlusive or a combination of both that prevents skin dryness. A hydrator is a cosmetic treatment product that promotes epidermal health by supporting the skin’s natural ability to replenish HA. SCE stands for stem cell extract. VitisenSCE™ technology contains a proprietary antioxidant extracted from Vitis vinifera flower stem cells. Exclusive to SkinMedica®, it is one of the key ingredients that allows HAs to support the skin’s ability to replenish its own hyaluronic acid for overall skin health. The whey protein used in HA5® is derived from milk powder. Therefore a person with a history of milk or whey protein that triggers an immune response should not use this product. HA5® Rejuvenating Hydrator should be applied twice daily – in the morning and evening-immediately before moisturizer in a normal regimen.

Wrinkles are simply creases in the skin that occur when collagen and elastin break down over time due to age, use, UV exposure and smoking. Collagen and elastin are connective tissue found within your skin. As these two are weakened, your skin loses strength and flexibility…And once that happens, skin begins to sag thus causing wrinkles to form. While some of this process is natural and determined by genetics and age, it is possible to delay this effect quite a while if you follow a few steps.
Decades of clinical studies show that retinol is a miracle ingredient when it comes to the skin. Retinol
- stimulates the production of collagen and elastin
- increases cell turnover
- fades pigmentation
- shrinks pores
- retexturizes the skin leading to reduction in fine lines and smooth skin surface.
Retinol is photosensitive and should only be worn at night. Never go outside or into the sunlight with it on; this could cause adverse effects. You could begin to notice changes anywhere from within a week to about eight weeks.
Retinoids exfoliates your skin and may cause it to become sensitive. It may peel, flake, turn red and become dry during initial use. It is key to use small amounts every other day, until your skin works up tolerance for vitamin-A.” Wash with a gentle face scrub a few times a week to clear the top layer of old skin.
People with rosacea or eczema should not use Retinol. It should not be used with a heavy hand and should be used [in tandem] with a moisturizer.
Sunscreen is an essential component of any skin care regime. Sunscreen protects the skin from the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays which cause fine lines and wrinkles and sun spots.
Lytera® is a novel, non-prescription, non-hydroquinone skin brightening product that minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Clinical studies with Lytera® have shown:

There are SkinMedica® products that are formulated to be used on all skin types and most skin conditions including sensitive and post-procedure skin. We recommend you always ask your physician which products and regimen will best address your skin type and concerns.
Photodamage to the skin is caused by exposure to harmful ultraviolet light. Photodamage can be acute, as in sunburn, or more commonly, chronic, due to gradual changes in the skin caused by an accumulation of sun exposure throughout one’s life. Sun exposure is by far the most influential environmental factor affecting aging of the skin.
Lines and wrinkles are caused by degenerative changes in the proteins of the skin’s infrastructure such as loss of stored antioxidants and reduction in collagen. Wrinkles are also caused by movement of the skin resulting in creases over time.
Age spots are also known as sun spots or solar lentigines. Age spots are associated with cumulative sun exposure. Sun spots mostly appear in areas consistently exposed to sunlight such as the back of the hands, the forearms, neck, chest and face. The pigment producing cells in the skin (melanocytes) are stimulated to produce more pigment when exposed to ultraviolet rays.
Using sun protection and appropriate skin care products containing specialty ingredients is essential in maintaining healthy skin.
We have not done any product testing on pregnant women or nursing mothers. We recommend you consult your physician before using any SkinMedica® products during pregnancy or while breast feeding.
